A pregnant teenage girl at a private Christian high school in Hagerstown, Maryland was not allowed to attend graduation. According to the principal, “…not because she was pregnant, but because she was immoral.”
Many question the high school’s decision and rightly so. The young woman chose life for her baby, rather than abortion. She ought to be praised and supported, not punished and shamed. People do not always behave in morally respectable ways. Human beings are fallen creatures. The high school ought to have demonstrated Christian values by offering forgiveness and love to the young woman.
What would Jesus do? The Gospel is clear. John 8:7 “When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, ‘Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.’”
The pro-life movement is more than protecting children in the womb. We must also protect their mothers. The decision made by the administration at this high school has done harm not only to the young woman, but to the pro-life movement.
